It's World Stroke Day, and the Mental Health Champin, Professor Siobhan O'Neill is backing Stroke Association NI's call that every stroke survivor in Northern Ireland have timely access to professional support for any psychological or emotional challenge they face after their stroke, for as long as they need.
We need to see:
• Appropriate investment in psychology resources
• A comprehensive stroke workforce plan
• Co-production of services
• Greater public awareness of the mental health impact of stroke
Professor Siobhan O'Neill, Mental Health Champion NI:
“Stroke is a traumatic and lifechanging event, with a huge psychological impact and a high risk of mental illness. To improve outcomes for survivors, stroke rehabilitation services need to be co-designed with those affected by strokes, and incorporate emotional support, counselling and peer support.”
